I am not a Trump voter. I also worked hard and got an education, as did my brother and sister.
I am recalling being treated badly, publicly, in front of adults, and by adults, as a child, because of poverty and my parents political and religious ideology and how bad that felt.
As I realized those people regarded themselves as good and kind, in fact the BEST of progressive thinkers, it was a real turn-off, and had I not been intellectually curious, I might not have explored models of political theory, been a Political Sciene major, etc.
Progressives lose voters as children. The Roman Catholic Church says, "If we can get them by the age of 6, we have them for life." and Evangelicals are the ones who use that quote the most. You vote with your heart.
My personal belief is just a few nicer parents could have made a huge difference to me, much sooner. The indifference and the cruelty...the collective memory of MAGAs goes there. Not to policy. They are not policy wonks.
