I don’t think you can compare Americans to any other developed nations (e.g. Germany) on the health front: when half an American couple gets sick, their insurance covers or lack thereof could drag the previously well-off or middle income people into bankruptcy. This causes unhappy marriage and divorce, sometimes just so the sick spouse can qualify for benefits they otherwise wouldn’t.
