I think what people misunderstand is that just being seen as not well-off when around these folks is a kiss of death opportunity- wise. Employers & universities prefer these rich students/grads bc they want access to their networks. They research candidates as they apply and screen out the less affluent (and therefore less well connected) people. No state senators come sniffing around the regular people for hand-outs!
