The people who “overcome” have lots and lots of support, usually in the form of large networks of family support. Many people who experience chronically illness or disability do not have that, and when loneliness and isolation (or active shaming) are part of your lifestyle, it is very stressful which is a deadly stressor/comorbidity for many conditions and will make “overcoming” much harder than if you had what research calls “evidence-based, person centered formal and informal support systems” in place.
